Por ejemplo, el chorro impacta el material con una cierta energía cinética Ea y abandona el material con una energía Eex., la cual debe ser menor que la inicial para que se produzca el corte. La diferencia de estas dos energías es la energía disipada Edis., producto del impacto, la fricción, etc., en el corte.&lt;br /&gt;Edis = Ea - Eex (1)&lt;br /&gt;La energía cinética depende directamente de los flujos másicos de agua y abrasivo, así como también de la velocidad del chorro agua-abrasivo que depende de la presión de agua generada por la bomba y de la eficiencia del inyector.&lt;br /&gt;Para que se logre el corte, los investigadores han podido comprobar, que existe una presión límite entre el éxito del corte y el fracaso de éste, que se puede denominar “presión crítica”, la que varía para los diferentes materiales y espesores. Pero también influyen otros parámetros en el éxito del corte como: la cantidad de abrasivo, tipo de éste, cantidad de agua, diámetros de tobera/tubo colector.&lt;br /&gt;La elección de una correcta presión de trabajo y de los parámetros de operación, influyen de manera importante en el corte, tanto en su capacidad y calidad como en los costos.
